One of Kruger’s giants – Dr Salomon Joubert

By Bugs van Heerden of Conservation Imperative Group.

Late afternoon on Wednesday 14 September 2022, one of Kruger’s giants, Dr Salomon Joubert, unexpectedly passed away.

Doc Solly, as he was often referred to by colleagues and friends was 81 years of age and always lead a healthy and active lifestyle. The cause of death is unknown to me at this stage.

He started working in the Park on 1 November 1964 at a youthful 23 years of age (as section for Klipkoppies, east of Letaba) and retired from the Park as Executive Director, KNP on 31 July 1994 (having been in latter position from 1 April 1987).

He spent much of his career in Scientific Services/ Research and was responsible for much of the policies and plans applicable at the time. Salomon was recently in the beloved Park (at Tzendze) and when we spoke subsequently he indicated how fabulous their stay was there. He was extremely passionate about the Park, knew it better than any other person alive, and spent several months visiting it during his retirement years. In October 2007, he launched his three volume book, The Kruger National Par, A History, after many years of research and hard work. His unexpected passing came as a massive shock to the many that knew him.

Our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Bets, his daughter, Magdaleen, and son, Dusty, their families and loved ones, with this sudden passing. Our thoughts are with you during this time of emptiness and longing!
